The ecology of survival: environmental sustainability and farming in Portuguese rural and island areas, c. 1840-1900

Abstract
This article analyses, in the context of nineteenth-century Portugal, the tensions between human communities and ecosystems arising from the scarcity of natural resources and the ecological impacts associated with capitalist agricultural development. Starting from the premise that human behaviour must be understood in its articulation with the environment, the study examines two contrasting cases: the crisis generated by the potato blight in Madeira in the 1840s and the social movements associated with the expansion of rice cultivation in the second half of the nineteenth century. Although distinct in temporal and geographical terms, both episodes reveal processes of construction of environmental protection practices and discourses aimed at mitigating the risk of hunger, responding to ecological imbalances, and redefining community survival strategies.
