Agrarian question and rural family labor in contemporary Uruguay: Reflections from a Social Work practice

Abstract
The analysis of the agrarian question in Uruguay makes it possible to recognize the persistence of inequalities linked to land concentration and to the precariousness of rural family labour. Despite state intervention through the National Colonization Institute (INC), the results have been very limited. The processes of rural colonization, mediated by state action, refer to the specific modality through which a group of families gain access to land parcels that enable—although do not guarantee—the development of a productive project and a particular way of life. The signing of a cooperation agreement between the Department of Social Work and the National Colonization Institute marked the starting point of the project entitled "Strengthening Colonization Processes: An Approach to Families as Units of Production and Social Reproduction and to Associative Practices". Social Work, by articulating research, outreach, and territorial intervention, demonstrated its potential to overcome fragmented perspectives, promote associative practices, and strengthen the integration of colonies into the region. The concrete experience confirmed the relevance of the agrarian question as a particular expression of the social question and the need to conceive policies and practices that deepen its approach.
